June Recap

Summer can be so hectic for the ladies of the ministry, but they have all been hard at work and I, for one, am loving every minute of it!

I finally remembered to photograph our meetings and projects and I'm so happy to share them with everyone. (I get too caught up socializing and forget to grab the camera!) :) Check out the awesome work!
LtR: Nancy, Marie, Lynda, Jan
Getting to know all of these women has been fantastic, there's people here from all walks of life, but sometimes it takes some conversation and a common goal before you discover the incredible things about them.

One of our members shared that while she was undergoing chemotherapy, she found that it was important for her to surround herself with bright, cheerful colors. They allowed her to maintain an upbeat and positive outlook, and reminded her to count the blessings in her life, even though they were occasionally difficult to see. I was so thankful she shared this experience and will definitely keep it in mind when I shop for yarn again. She is also very talented at accessorizing her shawls. This flower is removable! How cool is that? Not going to lie, I'm a little jealous. My attempts to accessorize aren't nearly as successful, maybe she can give me a little guidance. :) I have a sneaking suspicion that she also has inspector gadget fingers, she flies through projects!!! She's made so many shawls for the ministry I've lost track, as well as completed smaller versions for her granddaughters! I love that she's passing that on to her family, I may not know how to crochet now if it wasn't for my own mother and grandmother!

Another awesome thing has been seeing each other progress in our crochet endeavors! Another of our members learned to crochet during our first meeting and I love watching her grow and blossom! She has been trying new techniques, stitches, yarns, and she even bought a cool, personalized bag to carry her projects! (FYI men, when a woman buys a bag for a specific hobby, you know it's serious!) :)

I've also enjoyed watching another member as she rediscovers her love of crochet. I mentioned before that she set it down for years and picked it up again when we began our ministry...and then promptly blew the rest of us out of the water! She has been exploring different styles of shawls and has inspired me to go beyond my own limits and 'think outside the box.' I'm always excited to see what she brings in because I know I'll always be amazed and say, "I never thought of that!"

I also love to see the sharing of knowledge between members. There are more than a few women here who are so immensely talented,  and they are such a wealth of information. I admire their prowess and appreciate their ability to look at a pattern or a project and instantly give me advice on how to improve. There's just some things you simply can't learn on the internet and I am so appreciative of their wisdom and guidance for everyone.

I'm not sure what I enjoy the most, getting to know these incredible women, the actual crochet work, the quiet time to speak to God, or the impact these shawls will have, but I know that there's just something fantastic here and I thank God daily for everything that he has done and created! What do you thank God for?

Project Share!

Everyone has been hard at work, fingers and yarn flying, to finish our first round of shawls. Check out current members projects! :) I hope you're wearing socks...because they're about to get knocked off!

Peggy has been hard at work at this beautiful shawl using some gorgeous Lion Brand Homespun yarn in this beautiful coral color! She has been crocheting for years and is incredibly talented.
She even overcame some minor yarn issues, but is going strong again. Show her some love, this shawl looks so warm and comforting I could get lost in it!
I am loving Peggy's gorgeous, rich color! So beautiful!
Luckily this only happened for about two feet!

Remember how I said these shawls are therapeutic for both the creator and the receiver? Jan discovered this when she picked up crochet hooks after setting them aside years ago. She crochets while watching (or listening to) the baseball game on TV and while working at her u-pick blueberry farm! She shared that crocheting brought back wonderful memories of crocheting while she traveled the country with her husband while he was serving our country. She's using this variegated yarn to practice her pattern, but oh my gosh do I love the pattern! Shell patterns have always held a special place in my heart, but her work is so neat and exact, I am loving it even more! (Don't let her try to tell you it's a mess, she's a pro!!) I can't wait to see this when it's finished!
Jan's spectacular shell shawl! :)
Anne is one of our long-distance members who has also felt God's grace while crocheting her shawls. She is currently caring for her elderly mother and works on her shawls while spending time with her mom. What an awesome way to pass the time in a way that both shares the glory of God, and allows her to connect with her mom! She is located on the east coast of Florida and her shawls will be benefiting recipients near her! How cool is it that our message has already made it outside our small community? Way to go Anne!
Seriously, I'm IN LOVE with this variegated yarn in double crochet!
And finally, I'm working on a shawl using this technique to create Fair Isle Crochet (to mimic the very popular Fair Isle Knitting). I learned the technique from a Craftsy class and was so excited that the first project was a shawl! The portion shown here will be a pocket, the base of the shawl will be completed in the darker brown color.
Fair Isle Crochet
I hope you enjoyed these beautiful shawls, we certainly have some SERIOUS talent! I know the shawl recipients will love them even more!
God Bless!

Finding Patterns

People ask me all the time how I find the patterns I use. Nearly all of my patterns come from one of three places. (All of which are primarily free!) Where else do you find patterns?

1. Ravelry
Ravelry is one of my favorite sites when I'm looking for a specific pattern because it has an awesome search engine that lets me really narrow down the results. Plus, it literally has THOUSANDS of patterns! I can search by craft (knit or crochet), type of garment, size, gender specific items, yardage, yarn weight, price, etc. I can also store my favorite patterns in my Ravelry 'library' so I'll always have access to them. I'm not going to lie, the site is extremely extensive and can be a tad difficult to navigate (I've been using it for years and still find new features!) but once you've gotten it down, you'll love it, trust me!

2. Craftsy
Craftsy reminds me of a mix of Pinterest and Ravelry. It has the awesome Ravelry-style patterns, but in a easy-to-navigate Pinterest-style format. Don't get me wrong, I like Pinterest, but I often get frustrated by some of the faulty links, I never have to worry about that at Craftsy! Plus, Craftsy offers great, professional online classes to learn all kinds of new and fun techniques! :)

3. I make it up.
I know, this probably isn't what you want to hear, but the more you knit and crochet, the more you'll begin to really understand how to put things together foundationally to achieve a specific look or effect and you'll start doing this on your own. I often tag things on Pinterest I'd like to emulate (often the link doesn't take me to an actual pattern, ugh!) and then I spend some time copying it to the best of my ability, or altering it to fit my needs. Don't worry, this is a skill that will come with time, and a bit of trial and error. My advice is to let it happen naturally, it's taken me years to learn this, expect failure, I often frog the same project a dozen times before I get it to look like I want, keep a good friend nearby, my mom is awesome to bounce ideas off of or give me tips, and, perhaps most importantly, write EVERYTHING down! I carry a small journal with me and write everything down, including the mistakes. When I finish the project I re-write it in a way I can reuse later on, because trust me, eventually you WILL want to know how you did something and you WILL NOT remember.

God Bless!

Witnessing

Does anyone else struggle to share the love of Christ with others? It drives me absolutely bonkers! It's so AWESOME to have a relationship with Him, but every time I try to share it I sound like a tongue-tied toddler.

I have discovered, that the best way to share Christ's love, is to do it using something I love. We were blessed with the ability to knit or crochet for a REASON, and it's the perfect venue to start conversation among strangers.

I know that every time I go on vacation, take public transportation, go to a restaurant with a wait, or visit the doctor's office, I take my project with me so I'll have something to do. (I'm not going to lie, I've also taken my projects to theme parks, movie theaters, vet's offices, etc. I guess I'm a bit of a fanatic, lol!) I can't tell you how many times other, extremely bored, people have asked me what I'm working on. It finally hit me one day how much of an impact I can make by sharing the Prayer Shawl, and the Ministry with those people!

The next time someone strikes up a conversation with you, share the story of Christ via your "prayer shawl story."

God Bless! :)

Our First Meeting

We had our first official meeting yesterday and it was awesome! There was lots of knitting, crocheting, and teaching, but even better, there was tons of laughter and good conversation among some wonderful, caring ladies. :)

For those of you who were unable to attend, or are participating long distance, we certainly missed you and had you in our thoughts! Hopefully I can fill you in as much as possible, those who were in attendance, let me know if I missed anything. :)

We discussed who the first recipients of our shawls would be, and there seemed to be a general agreement that it would be nice to share them with members of the church who may need a bit of extra comfort. Let me know, if you have anyone specific in mind!

There was lots of instruction going around as well as a veteran knitter learned to crochet and some eager newbies began their first projects! These shawls will truly be a work of labor and love and I know these ladies are going to feel such a wonderful sense of accomplishment when their shawls are completed! A few of our other ladies also shared some tips and techniques on crocheting and knitting. It was truly impossible not to feel a wonderful sense of community as we sat and worked joyfully for our Lord.

A few of use shared projects we recently began, and we also got to see a beautiful (and finished!) shawl that was made for one of the group members by a close friend. Her story of how the shawl brought her strength and comfort in a dark moment was both heartbreaking and inspiring, a good reminder of why we do what we do. :)

I know there was many different stories circulating of how shawls brought them strength, I encourage you to write and share these stories with me, I'd like to do a post that is a collection of these stories to provide inspiration to as many as possible. Please also share any pictures of our meeting, or pictures of the project you're currently working on, I'd love to share them with the group!

You can share your story or photos through the comment section, by emailing me at thatfarmgirlteacher@gmail.com, or by messaging me on Facebook.

I have to say, I truly can't wait until we meet again!

How to Crochet (Right or Left Handed)

This series of videos will demonstrate the basics of crochet. I encourage you to test out each of these stitches before beginning your first official pattern. You're more than welcome to contact me through the comment section or my email if you get stuck or have any questions. Enjoy! :)

Right hand: first video. Left hand: second video

I added a pattern for a washcloth, I encourage you to use it as a way to practice each of these stitches. Why a washcloth? Because they're small but still functional, and if it isn't beautiful, that's more than okay. :) The pattern uses the most common stitches, but feel free to experiment with the less commonly used ones as well.

MOST COMMON STITCHES:

Guide to Hooks: A quick guide to explain different types of hooks and the ways they can be used.

Guide to Yarn: A very basic guide to the most common types of yarn. (There are many other types of yarn, but as a beginner you really only need to know what is sold at your local stores.) I encourage you to experiment and see what style of yarn you like the best.

Basic Slip Knot: The slip knot is almost always used to begin crocheting, it is truly one of the very first things you will ever need!
How I hold my yarn: Keep in mind there is not a 'right' way to do this. You have to find what is comfortable and effective for you.

Foundation Chains (Ch): The chain stitch is used as the foundation for the rest of the piece, and, depending on the pattern, chains my be used throughout the piece as well. I encourage you to practice making long chains to get a feel for gauge/pattern.

Single Crochet (sc): One of the smaller stitches used in crochet patterns, very common for a tightly crocheted product.

Double Crochet (dc): A very tall stitch that is commonly used on more loosely crocheted items. Typically a bit faster than the single crochet stitch, however many believe it uses a bit more yarn. (Most of the time this is true, however it depends on the pattern as well.)

Slip Stitch (sl): Almost invisible stitch, often used for joining pieces or moving the yarn over a bit. (It's hard to explain unless you've encountered it in a pattern.)
AND
Finishing/Fastening Off: What do you do with that last stitch? It's really not that hard, I promise. :)

LESS COMMONLY USED STITCHES

Half Double Crochet (hdc): Sort of in between the height of a single crochet and double crochet.

Treble Crochet (tc): An EXTRA tall double crochet-style stitch.

WASHCLOTH PATTERN:

With MC: (main color)
ch 26
Row 1: sc in second ch from hook and all the way across. ch 2, turn. (25 sc)
Row 2: dc in first sc, and each sc across. ch 1, turn. (25 dc)
Continue in this manner until piece measures 7 inches
Final row: sl st across, fasten off.

Cast on stitches in multiples of three - 54, 57, or 60.  For example, if you use size 11 needles and cast on 54 stitches, 3 skeins of 'slightly bulky' yarn is enough.  Some yarns vary in elasticity which will affect your outcome, as will your knitting tension.  If the yarn you have chosen has a multicolored stripe, be careful when tying on a new skein.  Make sure the color sequence is correct.  Also, tie on the new skein in the body of the shawl, instead of an edge, as the ends tend to show.

*
First Row: k3, p3, to end

*
Second Row: Always start the next row with the opposite stitch of what you see.
For instance, if the first stitch on the needle is a knit, then start with a purl.
KNIT THE PURLS AND PURL THE KNITS!!!
It should NOT look like ribbing.
Note: If you cast on 57 stitches you will always start with K3

Chain 54 stitches or desired width of shawl.
Chain 1, turn, single crochet in each of the stitches to end.  Chain 3 and turn.
Double crochet in top of each single crochet.  Repeat this row 2 more times.
Chain 1 and do 1 row of single crochet to end. Chain 3 and turn.
Do 3 rows of double crochet.  Repeat pattern to end (1 row single, 3 rows double)
End with 1 row of single. Finish with fringe.

*Note: that crocheting typically uses more yarn than knitting, so you might have to adjust the width and size of hook or use another 1/2 skein.
It has been suggested that skeins of the same dye lot be purchased.

Before you Begin (Prayers)

If you're like me, you're probably ready to jump right in and get to work! In fact, waiting can feel like the most tedious and frustrating thing in the world, but remember, the process of creating the prayer shawl is a spiritual one and should be treated as such.

Take a deep breath, pause, and say a few words to God. Thank him for allowing you to do this in his name, ask him to bless you as you begin working, and say a prayer for the receiver of the shawl, even if you're not sure who that is yet.

Your prayer can be totally spontaneous, or if you're having a day we're you're stuck, borrow one of the following prayers! :) Consider keeping your favorite prayer in a bag with your work so you'll always have it at your fingertips!

If you have a particular prayer you wrote, I encourage you to share it with the group (through comments or email) so others can be inspired by you! I will post it on our prayers page as soon as possible! :)

I also encourage you to say a quick prayer each time you pick up your work. Nothing is more valuable than quiet time with the Lord.

The following prayers are not my own work, they can be found (with many others) on the prayer page of www.shawlministry.com, the inspiration for our group. I encourage you to take a few moments to check them all out! :)

Mantle of Love, Healer of Hearts,

I light this candle as a reminder of Your presence as I begin.
I ask a blessing from all who have come before me;
whose hands have been instruments of creation and beauty;
who have used humble tools and hand-spun wool in order to provide cover and warmth for
themselves and those they loved;
who have felt, as I will feel, the yarn in their fingers;
who have seen, as I will see, the growth of the fabric;
who have heard, as I will hear, the click of the needles.

Guide my attention to stay on course.
Hold me close and ground me.
Bless, also, this yarn and these knitting needles.
May any negative energy connected to them be cast away as I cast on;
and all positive energy bound in as I bind off.
In their simplicity, may I find comfort and solace.

Bless my hands...
Often just appendages at the end of my arms...
workers doing their job without appreciation...looked at, yet not really seen.
These instruments of love have done mundane tasks, yet also create beauty.
They reach out, touch, stroke, scrub, lift, grasp, gesture and guide.
These hands, my hands, gifts of great importance,
Blessings be on them and in them as I begin.
May the fruits of their labor be good!

Holy One,
Whose womb is threaded and waiting,
guide us to pick up the thread
and walk the spiral through the dark and
difficult passages.

Life Cord,
Who sustains us as we move to our center, give us courage
to meet our souls.
Comfort us through our dismantling, wrapped in
Your loving embrace.

Mantle of Love,
Rebirth us with Wisdom, as we are knitted once
again back into wholeness.

Dear Lord,
Take away all my negative thoughts and feelings as I work on this shawl of comfort for ___________. Guide my hands as they work and keep my thoughts positive and centered around her. I make each stitch with love and a prayer in my heart for her comfort, hope, and healing. May __________ feel Your loving arms around her as she wears this shawl and may it represent to her Your power to heal any hurt. Comfort her, Bless her, Heal Her. I ask this in Jesus name. Amen

Dear Lord, Bless these needles that they stay strong and light so they don't tire the hands that wield them;
Bless this yarn with strength and softness that it will form a cloth of warmth and comfort;
Bless these hands with strength and skill so they may make well crafted gifts;
Bless this heart with strength and perseverance so I will see this work through to bring comfort to those in need;
But most of all dear Lord, Bless the wearer of this cloth with strength and comfort that
their burdens may be lightened and their hearts gladdened with the realization that they are loved.

Psalm 90:17 Let the favor of the Lord our God be upon us and confirm for us the work of our
hands; yes, confirm the work of our hands.

Dear Lord, please bless these needles of mine.
That I may make a shawl of strength, faith,
health and love. Give this shawl the ability to comfort,
the ability to heal, the ability to give strength
where it is needed and of your will it to be.
May the recipient be able to know that you are with
them and that they are not alone.
That they are cared for and loved and prayed for.
That your loving arms are around them,
to protect them for whatever reason they should need,
whenever they put this shawl on.
Lord, thank-you for the
blessings that this shawl is given. Amen.

Dear Lord; Bless my hands as I knit today.  May each

comfort in my work and remind me of Your ultimate protection.
Wrap me in Your spirit so that I will be more caring towards
those in need.

Grant me patience as I create this shawl.  And bless
my handiwork as it travels to bring comfort and peace
to someone in need of Your warming embrace.  Amen.

Say a Little Prayer
As I start this shawl I say a little prayer.
In hopes this shawl will be worn,
And not thrown neatly on a chair.
I say a little prayer that the Lord grants
your intentions that only you know.
I hope this shawl gives you comfort
where ever you go.
So, when you are happy, sad or you think
no one cares.
Wrap this shawl around you and say a little prayer.
Hope, Faith and Love is in each stitch I make
from beginning to end.
And with all the prayers I pray with this shawl that I send.
I pray that you know that the Lord is always there.
As I am finished with this shawl I say a little prayer.

_____(name)_____ is in my heart today
as I knit and as I pray.

May each stitch be filled with care,
comfort, strength, and warmth to share.

May the love in every row

Beginning Prayer:

Heavenly Father, You are Alpha and Omega. You know our yesterdays, todays and tomorrows.
Be with us now as we work together to bring your comfort and strength to those who are in need.

We lift up the names of those who have received a shawl.
We lift up the names of those will receive a shawl in progress.
We lift up the names of those who will need a shawl in the future.

Be their tower of strength.
Be by their side.
Be their peace and comfort.

Grandmother’s Prayer*

May God’s grace be upon this shawl….
Warming, comforting, enfolding and embracing;
just as a Grandmother has done for all her children and Grandchildren.
May this shawl be a reminder of a safe and secure hug,
and that a Grandmother’s love is sustaining,
just like the Love from the Lord.
This shawl in three colors, or stitches or three,
is a reminder of the Trinity:
Father, Son and Holy Spirit.
May it also remind us of how we are “knit together” in a family,
and of the love that flows from one generation to the next.
Grandmothers are always there to hold us, guide us,
and walk by our sides, throughout our lives;
taking us down the paths that lead us to our God.

God grant you peace, hope, wisdom, a happy heart, the ability to
comfort, strength, patience, and joy.
As you wear this shawl feel the loving arms of our Lord
around your shoulders.
Grandmothers are very special teachers to the following
generations.
God Bless You.

Prayer for Shawl Maker and Receiver of the Shawl
Composed by W. Paffenroth

Dear God,
As I make this shawl for one of your lambs, please….
Bless my hands – that will start with nothing and create something warm & comforting.
Bless my mind- that I will create something useful,
Bless my imagination – that I will design something unique & beautiful,
Bless my heart – that some of it will go with this hug to let the receiver know it was made with love,
Bless my patience – that I will continue to move forward & focused on this gift until I am finished,
Bless my soul – that it is open to continue to make gifts for those in need,
Bless my family & friends – who encourage me to continue making these gifts that give hope, faith & love,
Bless the one that receives this gift. May it help them to remind them of your love each time they wrap it around their soul.
And, Thank you for blessing me with the ability to make these hugs that warm someone.
Let it bring some healing or joy to those who need it & be a reminder that someone cares.
Thank you for the opportunity to share your love each day.
Amen

The Yarn’s Journey
© 2014 All Rights Reserved
By: Tish Hoar

As the yarn's journey starts,
It becomes a prayer that comes from the shawl maker's heart,
The yarn becomes a journey of silent prayer,
Through it's twists and knots, the prayer is still there,
The quiet clicking or the swish of the yarn,
Tells you the prayer is still going on,
The Shawl maker adds on another skein,
The prayer is anew and doesn't wane,
As time goes by and the shawl maker's mind sometimes wanders,
The yarn goes on and prayerfully ponders,
A prayer is said and the stitching subsides,
The yarn comes to an end and is knotted and tied,
It begins a new journey and given with prayer,
It's Hope, Faith and Love the recipient wears,
But in the silent echoes you can prayerfully hear,
The prayers, the quiet clicking, and the swish of the yarn,
The yarn never ceases and its silent prayers are still going on...

Song Lyrics:
You knit us together though far apart,
A fabric of beauty, of warmth and art,
So bind us together, through time and through space
To grow into your garment of grace
To wrap the world in love’s Embrace
You knit us together, all shapes and size,
The fabric you make is your great Surprise
So bind us together, through time and through space
To grow into your garment of grace
To wrap the world in love’s Embrace
You knit us together, all shades and hue
The gold of our joy and our sorrow’s blue
So bind us together, through time and through space
To grow into your garment of grace
To wrap the world in love’s Embrace
You knit us together, to serve and share
The wounds that we bind show your healing care
So bind us together, through time and through space
To grow into your garment of grace
To wrap the world in love’s Embrace
You knit us together, your seamless robe
To care and to comfort, around the globe
So bind us together, through time and through space
To grow into your garment of grace
To wrap the world in love’s Embrace
You knit us together in so many ways
To live with each other, and sing your praise.
So bind us together, through time and through space
To grow into your garment of grace
To wrap the world in love’s Embrace

A Prayer for Comfort and Warmth
By: Michael Brandon

Loving God, bless these hands. Guide them as only you can.
In my hands you have placed so much responsibility.
Bless each stitch and weave, each movement is yours.
I am your servant.  I am a tool at your disposal.
Give me the strength to do right in your name.
Forgive me if I falter, or fall short.  You give me comfort and warmth with your word.
Help me to comfort others with these hands, and lead my heart towards grace.
